Of the 15 Hover prices we verify, 11 are flat, the first year equals the renewal, and 4 discount the first year. Across the discounting ones the median renewal is 12.4× the first year, so the advertised figure understates the ongoing cost on roughly 27% of what it sells.

The steepest example in its catalogue is .tech: $4.99 in the first year against $63.99 at every renewal, 12.8× as much. That is not a criticism of the registrar so much as of the extension, promotional pricing on new gTLDs is set to win the first year, but it is the number to budget against.

On a .com specifically, Hover renews at $18.99 all in, which puts ten years at $189.90. Compare that ten-year figure rather than the first year when weighing it against another registrar.

Hover documents its WHOIS privacy as: Free, included on all eligible domains (Hover calls it 'WHOIS Privacy').

Note the qualifier in that wording. "Eligible" or "most" domains means some extensions are excluded, and the exclusions are usually set by the registry rather than the registrar: a number of ccTLDs require registrant details to be published and no registrar can override that. Check your specific extension rather than the headline policy.

What privacy does is replace your name, postal address, phone number and email in the public record with the provider's forwarding details. What it does not do is hide the registration from the registrar, the registry, or a court order, and it does not stop a domain being linked to you by other means. Since GDPR, most registries also redact personal data by default regardless of what the registrar sells, so for many extensions the privacy product is a smaller addition than it was. Hover describes its DNS as: Solid managed DNS with standard records, DNSSEC support, and a clean management interface.

We have not recorded ALIAS or ANAME support here. That matters if you need the apex of your domain to point at a platform hostname rather than an IP address, which most hosted site builders and store platforms ask for: check before committing. DNSSEC is documented, which lets resolvers verify that the answers they receive have not been tampered with in transit.

No public API is documented, so every DNS change is a manual one: worth weighing if you manage more than a handful of domains. Remember that the registrar and the DNS host do not have to be the same company: you can keep a domain here and point its nameservers anywhere. An authenticator app and SMS are not equivalent, even though they sit side by side in the same settings page. SMS can be redirected by a SIM swap, which is a known and repeatedly used route into domain accounts; codes from an app cannot. If both are enabled, the account is only as strong as the weaker one, so turn SMS off once the app is working.

Neither method resists a convincing phishing page: both produce a code a human can be persuaded to type somewhere else. Hardware security keys do resist it, and this registrar does not document support for them.

Transferring a .com in to Hover costs $18.99 against its renewal of $18.99. For most gTLDs a transfer adds a year to the registration rather than resetting it, so that fee buys a year rather than only paying for the move.

Across the 15 extensions we verify here, Hover never prices a transfer below its own renewal, so there is no transfer-in discount to exploit when consolidating domains at this registrar.

The process itself is the same everywhere and the constraints are ICANN's, not the registrar's: unlock the domain, get the authorization code from the losing registrar, and enter it at the gaining one. A gTLD cannot be transferred within 60 days of a registration, a previous transfer, or a change to the registrant contact, that last one catches people who tidy up their WHOIS details first and then find the domain locked for two months.
