Best Domain Extensions for an Online Store
13 extensions considered, 13 with a verified renewal price fetched from the registrar's own pricing page. Sorted by renewal, because that is what you pay every year after the first.
For a shop, the extension has one job: make a stranger who half-remembers your brand land on your checkout rather than on somebody else's. That argues strongly for .com when the name is available, and for .shop or .store when it is not, because both are unambiguous and read correctly to a shopper in any market. The commerce namespaces are also where promotional first-year pricing is most aggressive, so the gap between what you pay to start and what you pay every year afterwards is at its widest here. Ecommerce sites are long-lived; buy on the renewal.
Safe default: .shop

.shop and .store both work, and they are not interchangeable in tone
Both are open, both are widely recognised. .shop reads slightly more retail and slightly more international; .store reads a little more like a physical destination. Either is defensible. If your brand already uses one of the words, use the other one for the extension so the domain does not stutter.
Promotional pricing distorts this category more than any other
The commerce extensions are heavily discounted in the first year to win registrations, and renew at many multiples of that. An online store that succeeds will hold its domain for a decade, so the first-year figure is close to irrelevant to your actual cost. Every price table on this site shows the renewal alongside the first year for exactly this reason.
Platform-tied domains are a different decision
If your store runs on a hosted platform, the platform will often sell you the domain in the same checkout. That is convenient, and it also puts the asset that carries your customer relationships inside the account you are most likely to want to leave one day. Registering at an independent registrar and pointing DNS at the platform keeps the domain portable at no functional cost.
